According to the Persian report by IRNA, the emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council was convened at Iran’s request following the Israeli regime’s attack on Iranian territory.
The Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, in an urgent letter to the Security Council, condemned the Israeli regime’s attacks on nuclear facilities and the assassination of military officials, and requested an emergency session to address the regime’s blatant aggression.
Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, in a formal and urgent letter to the President of the Security Council in the early hours of Friday local time, strongly condemned the recent aggressions by the Israeli regime — backed by the United States — targeting peaceful nuclear facilities and senior military officials in Iran. He called for the immediate convening of an emergency Security Council meeting and urged decisive action from the international body in response to these criminal and provocative acts.
The letter stated: “In a reckless, unlawful, and premeditated act, the Israeli regime launched a series of coordinated military strikes against the Islamic Republic of Iran’s nuclear facilities and civilian infrastructure. These actions constitute a clear violation of the UN Charter and fundamental principles of international law, and their dangerous consequences pose a severe threat to regional and international peace and security.”
The Iranian mission underscored that one of the primary targets of these attacks was the Natanz nuclear facility, which is fully safeguarded and monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The letter emphasized: “An attack on such facilities not only puts Iranian civilians at direct risk but also raises the danger of a radiological catastrophe with irreversible consequences for the region. A deliberate strike on a safeguarded facility is a blatant breach of the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and of Iran’s legal obligations under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.”
Elsewhere in the letter, reference was made to a series of targeted terrorist operations in the Iranian capital, Tehran, which resulted in the martyrdom of senior military commanders and prominent nuclear scientists. These actions were described as clear examples of “state terrorism.” It added: “The Prime Minister of the Israeli regime has arrogantly and explicitly claimed responsibility for these crimes, which amounts to a public admission of committing international crimes.”
The letter further stressed that the recent actions by the Israeli regime represent a serious violation of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as a sovereign member of the United Nations. From the perspective of international law and international humanitarian law, these actions constitute aggression and war crimes. The letter concluded: “These acts represent a flagrant breach of Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the UN Charter, which explicitly prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.”
