Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, called on the UN Security Council to uphold and implement Resolution 487.
Araghchi, who is scheduled to meet today with the foreign ministers of the three European countries — the United Kingdom, Germany, and France — to discuss Iran’s nuclear program, stated that “the Arak Heavy Water Reactor — a facility fully under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and constructed in accordance with the technical specifications agreed upon in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to eliminate any proliferation risk — was bombed in broad daylight yesterday by the Israeli regime.”
He emphasized that, with the Security Council convening today, it is imperative for the Council to uphold and implement its own resolution — Resolution 487 — which was unanimously adopted in response to the Israeli regime’s attack on Iraq’s nuclear facilities in 1981.
“The language of this resolution is unequivocally clear: any military attack on nuclear facilities is considered an attack on the entire IAEA safeguards system and, ultimately, on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The resolution not only addresses past violations but also establishes a clear legal standard for future conduct, explicitly prohibiting the use or threat of use of force against safeguarded nuclear facilities.”
Araghchi warned that if the Security Council fails to act now, it must explain to the international community why its legal standards are being applied selectively, especially in a matter of such critical global importance. In doing so, the Council would bear shared responsibility — alongside the Israeli regime — for any potential collapse of the global non-proliferation regime.
