Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, told reporters upon arrival in Moscow today, “My trip to Moscow had been scheduled in advance. Following my visit to Istanbul, I am now in Moscow to meet with President Vladimir Putin to discuss the Zionist regime’s aggression and the threats facing the region. Given the recent U.S. attack, our discussions will undoubtedly be broader in scope.”

He added that Iran and Russia have always had close consultations. “We have continuously worked and consulted with one another on every issue and aligned our positions. The current sensitive regional situation requires our positions to be even more precise, serious, and closely coordinated.”

Regarding the U.S. attack on Iran, Araghchi said that “this assault is an act of aggression and must be unequivocally condemned. We appreciate Russia’s firm condemnation of the attack on Sunday.”

He expressed hope that this stance will be followed by concrete actions at the UN Security Council and other international platforms.
Araghchi went on to say, “The U.S. attack is not only a violation of the UN Charter, but also a blatant breach of international law — and more importantly, a direct assault on the NPT and the global non-proliferation system. This system, which plays a critical role in global security, is built on the premise that countries who renounce nuclear weapons are supported and protected. When a nuclear facility of a non-nuclear state is attacked and even publicly praised, and when international bodies like the UN Security Council or the IAEA cannot even issue a condemnation, it raises a serious question: What role does the NPT truly play in protecting the rights of countries pursuing peaceful nuclear energy?”

He stressed: “The U.S. strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities has deeply undermined the NPT and destabilized the non-proliferation regime, with serious consequences for international security — concerns that many countries are now beginning to share.”

Araghchi noted: “The Israeli and U.S. attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities were not triggered by any new development that could justify a claim of self-defense. These are clear acts of aggression. In contrast, Iran’s response is legitimate self-defense in accordance with international law.”
He concluded: “The repercussions of these acts are not limited to Iran. They carry serious consequences for the region, for the international community, and for the global legal order. Their impact will become clearer with time. Iran and Russia share common concerns, mutual challenges, and even common adversaries. We have always worked closely together to confront shared threats, and this is exactly what we plan to do in Monday’s meeting with President Putin.”

“In these perilous new circumstances, where the international order itself is being threatened, close coordination between Iran and Russia becomes critically important. We are determined to align our positions.”
