The top diplomats from the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation held a bilateral meeting in China on Tuesday.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, met and held talks on the sidelines of the Meeting of the Council of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of SCO Member States in the Chinese port city of Tianjin.
Details of the meeting are yet to be released.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, Araghchi held a meeting with President Xi Jinping of China.
Foreign ministers of SCO member states
Foreign ministers of SCO member states, including Iran, China, and Russia, have gathered in Tianjin for a two-day meeting aimed at addressing key political, security, and economic challenges facing the region.
The two-day Meeting of the Council of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of SCO Member States began on Tuesday in the port city of Tianjin, China, with the participation of Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and their counterparts from other SCO member states.
The meeting is expected to focus on the latest regional political, security, and economic developments and to coordinate preparations for the upcoming SCO leaders’ summit.
Key topics on the agenda include enhancing security cooperation in the fight against terrorism, promoting multilateralism, boosting regional trade, and strengthening the SCO’s geopolitical role in Eurasia.
Reports indicate that bilateral meetings between foreign ministers are also being held on the sidelines of the summit.
For Iran, participation in the meeting is seen as an opportunity to pursue enhanced economic, transit, and security cooperation with other SCO member states.
Iran’s Foreign Minister visits China’s President
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in China.
Araghchi held a brief bilateral meeting with Xi before joining the group meeting with all SCO foreign ministers.
