The governor of Isfahan has announced the pursuit of a $2.8 billion project to construct the world’s largest solar power plant in the province.

Mahdi Jamali-Nejad said that “in a historic and game-changing action, Isfahan, in collaboration with the Development Fund, will turn into the world’s largest solar destination.”

“The production capacity of this massive national project, which will be initiated in collaboration with the private sector in the near future, with an investment value of $2.8 billion, is 5,000 MW of electric power and will span over 6,000 hectares.”

This solar power plant will place Iran among developed nations with regard to producing renewable energies, while it is also a turning point on the path of sustainable development and reduction of the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.

He said that the project is unique in its kind and has an important role in reducing air pollution and the emission of greenhouse gases.
“The plan can produce thousands of direct and indirect jobs in the region,” he said, adding that it will cause Isfahan city to be known as “the hub of innovation in renewable energies in the world.”

Solar energy is one of the three solutions of Isfahan alongside tourism and AI. Isfahan province ranked 3rd in Iran with regard to producing electricity from solar energy, but rose to first place this year because of its efforts.

Currently, 240 MW of solar electricity in Isfahan is connected to the nationwide network. According to the goals set, the figure will reach 5,300 MW in the next two years.
