The caretaker of the Department of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts in Chenaran, Razavi Khorasan Province, has said that Radkan Tower is not merely a reflection of the architectural art of its time, but also a sign of the deep connection between science, art, and the daily lives of the people who lived during that period.

Mohammad Taherian described Radkan Tower as one of the most important and valuable historical and cultural monuments of Iran. He said that the tower was built in the year 700 AH (Islamic calendar), and it has always drawn the attention of researchers, tourists, and those interested in the history and culture of Iran due to its unique architecture and distinctive features.

“The tower is 25 meters high, with a cylindrical body and a conical dome. In addition, the external façade of the tower has been designed in a dodecagonal form up to a height of 12 meters. On top of the structure, there are 37 cylindrical elements,” said the official.

Taherian described the unique architecture of the tower as a key reason behind its visual beauty, which gives it a distinctive identity.

“There is an octagonal space inside the tower that demonstrates the accuracy and skill of the architects,” he added.

“The tower features brickwork and tilework decorations. Kufic inscriptions are located at the top, dating back to the Ilkhanid period. These inscriptions reflect the art and aesthetic sense of the artists of that time,” Taherian said.

He emphasized the historical significance of Radkan Tower and stated that, according to historical evidence, it is the work of the renowned astronomer and scientist, Khajeh Nasir al-Din Tusi.

“The tower has been designed in such a way that it allows for determining the time of the four seasons, leap years, and the beginning of Nowruz (the Persian New Year),” said Taherian, adding that all this is achieved through calculations based on sunlight and shadows.

“The tower is a practical tool for timekeeping and, in a way, reflects the advanced science and knowledge of its era,” he noted.

Taherian also said that Radkan Tower has been inscribed on the National Heritage List, which highlights its cultural and historical importance.

Radkan Tower attracts many domestic and international tourists, which has contributed to the region’s economic growth and has provided an opportunity to introduce visitors to Iran’s rich culture and history.
