August 12 marks International Caspian Sea Day, designated in memory of the signing of the “Tehran Convention” in 2003 by the five Caspian littoral states to protect the sea’s environment.

On this day, celebrations and ceremonies are held in countries along its shores to highlight the importance of this vast lake and the necessity of safeguarding it.
The Caspian Sea is the remnant of an ancient body of water known as the Tethys Sea. It is bordered by Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan.
Known in Persian as Darya-e Khazar, the Caspian Sea holds a nostalgic place in the hearts of Iranians. Every summer, many travel to the northern provinces of Gilan and Mazandaran to escape the heat and enjoy swimming in its waters.
However, negligence, poor management, illegal construction along the coast, the influx of tourists, as well as shipping and oil spills have harmed the coastal environment. Despite these challenges, the northern provinces of Iran along the Caspian Sea remain a popular destination for domestic tourism.
