Reacting to comments from an American official regarding a security memorandum between Iran and Iraq, the embassy asserted that “Iraq has the right to sign agreements and memoranda of understanding in accordance with its Constitution and laws, and it is not subordinate to any country.”
According to Al Jazeera, the embassy stressed that “Iraq’s security agreement was signed within the framework of mutual cooperation to ensure security and control the borders.” It emphasized that Iraq does not follow the policies of any other state and that its decisions are based solely on national interests.
The statement further explained that Iraq maintains friendly relations and cooperates with many countries, with such ties founded on mutual respect and shared interests.
Following the visit of Iran’s Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, to Iraq, U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce claimed that “the United States supports genuine Iraqi governance, not laws that make Iraq dependent on Iran.”
After meeting Iraqi officials and signing the security memorandum of understanding between the two nations, Larijani said that “the deal aims to prevent others from disrupting security between the two countries.”
