In this round, as in the previous ones, Majid Takht-e Ravanchi and Kazem Gharib-Abadi will lead the Iranian delegation.
The representatives of the European countries will also attend the meeting at the level of directors general of their foreign ministries, while the European Union will be represented by the High Representative for Foreign Affairs.
Following telephone conversations on Friday between Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, his European counterparts, and the EU foreign policy coordinator, the parties agreed to begin a new round of talks on Tuesday.
The last round of negotiations was held at Iran’s Consulate in Istanbul on July 25. The talks are being conducted under the condition that the three European member states of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) have threatened Iran that if it does not change its approach, the snapback mechanism will be activated by the end of the current month.
Iran, however, believes that given the European side’s failure to uphold its JCPOA commitments, their threat to reinstate sanctions through the snapback mechanism fundamentally lacks validity.
According to Iranian officials, the stance of the three European countries regarding Israel and the United States’ military aggression against Iran, as well as their demand for “zero enrichment” inside the country, has effectively withdrawn them from the JCPOA and deprived them of the right to invoke such a mechanism.
Nevertheless, the three European nations have presented their legal arguments, which has led to a legal confrontation between them and Iran, China, and Russia — the legitimacy of which has been rejected by the Europeans. Regarding the extension of the JCPOA, Iran emphasizes that since the three countries have no right to invoke the snapback mechanism, naturally, they also have no right to extend the agreement.
