The Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said at the opening session of the Board of Governors that inspections of Iran’s nuclear program have been the central focus of the agency’s efforts in recent weeks, particularly following the attacks in June.

Commenting on the ongoing talks between Iran and the IAEA, Rafael Grossi stated: “Progress has been achieved. I hope that in the next few days we can reach a successful outcome that will allow the full resumption of our necessary cooperation with Iran.”

Grossi also expressed hope that Iran would remain a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). When asked about the possibility of Iran’s withdrawal from the NPT, citing the IAEA’s conduct and the lack of guarantees for the security of Iran’s nuclear facilities, and that such things could encourage other countries to consider leaving the Treaty as well, Grossi said that “Countries must remain members of the Treaty. Even those that are not yet part of it should join, because it is advantageous,” he stressed.

He noted that Iran’s official stance is to remain within the NPT, though he acknowledged that differing voices are being heard domestically.

Grossi further revealed that he has been in close contact with Iranian officials: “We held technical meetings in Tehran and Vienna, and I also had several telephone conversations with Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi. I believe this is a process that will take time.”
