Resolution on Continuation of Sanctions Relief for Iran Fails to Pass

The United Nations Security Council has rejected a draft resolution that called for the permanent lifting of UN sanctions against Iran.

The United Nations Security Council has convened to review the draft resolution submitted by South Korea, as the Council’s rotating president for the current month (September), concerning the “continuation of sanctions relief for Iran.”

South Korea’s draft resolution, under Paragraph 11 of Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015), was introduced this morning, Friday, September 19 (local New York time), corresponding to Shahrivar 28, for consideration and a vote.

In the Security Council session, Russia’s representative accused the three European countries of acting in bad faith and resorting to the use of force against Iran, stressing that one week still remains of the thirty-day deadline. He also criticized South Korea, as the rotating president of the Council, for convening the meeting.

The Russian representative described the three European states as violators of the JCPOA and criticized them, along with the United States, for disregarding his country’s proposed resolution to extend the nuclear agreement.

U.S. actions have been in violation of the JCPOA; they have even attacked Iran’s nuclear facilities. Triggering the snapback mechanism is unacceptable, does not build confidence, and will lead to further tensions. China has always supported peaceful and diplomatic solutions. China believes we must not return to the chain of sanctions.وIran has consistently tried and declared that its nuclear program is peaceful, and despite attacks from Israel and the United States, it has cooperated with the IAEA. Europe should withdraw its snapback request. The use of force in international relations is not beneficial.
