President Masoud Pezeshkian told UN Secretary-General António Guterres that reimposing the terminated UN sanctions on Iran under the snapback mechanism is both immoral and unlawful.

During his meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed appreciation for Guterres’ efforts to promote peace and his stance on the Gaza war.

He criticized the UN Security Council’s inaction, saying that despite ongoing atrocities and genocide in Gaza, the Council has failed to take even the minimum step of condemning the war.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Pezeshkian stressed that Iran has fulfilled its obligations, and with Russia and China opposing the snapback, reimposing sanctions would be an illegitimate and unethical act. He voiced hope that the Secretary-General would use his capacity to help prevent such measures.

For his part, Guterres highlighted UN efforts to press Israel to end the war in Gaza, noting that the organization has lost several hundred staff members during the conflict.

He also expressed hope that a diplomatic solution can be found in the final days before the activation of the snapback mechanism, preventing the return of sanctions against Iran.
