In an interview with IRNA on Tuesday, Aliakbar Kiani Aliabad disclosed that the total trade exchanges at Sarakhs Customs have increased almost double fold to 2,633,734 tons in 2025.
According to Kiani, the volume of exports and imports increased by 20%, whereas the inbound and outbound transit was up by nearly 50% each, in the first six months compared to the same period last year.
There were 70% increase in the entry of trucks with different cargo contents, either bound for Iran or elsewhere through the Sarakhs Terminal in the same period, he said.
Stating that the steps are being taken to develop and upgrade hardware and software infrastructure at this border crossing given increase in traffic, Kiani said, “Some 400 to 450 trucks are currently transiting through the Sarakhs border point daily.”
Turkmenistan with over seven million population has joint borderlines with Iran, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Kyrgyzstan.
Sarakhs Customs is one of the three border crossings at Iran’s 531-kilometer border with Turkmenistan and is considered an important transit, especially with other Central Asian countries.
The annual trade volume between Iran and Turkmenistan, including exports, imports and transit through this border crossing, has been about 3.5 million tons.
