The presence of Armenians in Iran dates back to the early years of the 17th century. There are over 300 churches in Iran, some of which—like the Vank Cathedral in Isfahan and the Saint Thaddeus Church in West Azerbaijan—hold significant historical value.

Avash News: However, Christmas is not celebrated in Iran solely because of the Armenian community. The proximity of Christmas to Yalda Night, the visual similarities in the use of red and green colors, the joy-seeking spirit of Iranians, and, more recently, the closer connections people experience through social media have all contributed to Iranians embracing Christmas traditions alongside the rest of the world.

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, shops—especially in major cities like Tehran—decorate with Christmas ornaments, such as Christmas trees adorned with colorful baubles, shining stars, and decorative lights.

While it is true that Iran is a Muslim-majority country, Iranians have always shown great respect for other religions, particularly Christianity. Their inclination to use various occasions to convey feelings of joy and peace has led to Christmas being warmly welcomed in Iran as well.

If you are a foreigner in Iran around Christmas time, you can experience the festive atmosphere in a way that feels somewhat similar to your home country. Even Santa Claus can be seen in the streets and alleys, dancing in the Iranian style—much like “Amu Nowruz,” the central figure of Nowruz celebrations.

This demonstrates that Iranians adapt external cultural elements with an Iranian touch, striving to use every opportunity to respect different cultures and religions while spreading happiness.
Avash Media extends its Christmas greetings to all Christian compatriots and wishes peace and tranquility for the people of Iran and the world.
