The head of Iran’s Federation of Local and Indigenous Games and Rural Sports has said that his federation is seeking to inscribe 10 local and indigenous games on the World Heritage List by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21, 2026).

Avash News: Alireza Pasandideh said that currently, three indigenous and local games — namely Haft-Sang, Ganieh, and Laylay — have been added to the National Heritage List, and they are trying to inscribe 10 more games on the list by the end of the year.

He added that, since Iran has only one share in UNESCO, they are making efforts to use their share to inscribe one of the local and indigenous games, Haft-Sang, on the World Heritage List.

The official also said that the federation seeks to invest in camel riding so that, if the game is held in one of the Arab countries during the next Asian Games, Iran will be able to win medals.

Haft-Sang

Haft-Sang is a traditional Iranian game played with 4 to 16 players. As its name suggests, the game begins by stacking seven flat and smooth stones, from largest to smallest. One group is tasked with guarding the stones, while the other group tries to topple the opponent’s stone tower using a small ball.
