Avash News: Despite regional tensions, NEPRA has approved an increase in electricity imports from Iran to ensure an adequate power supply for Baluchistan Province.
However, NEPRA has expressed concern about repeated delays in submitting tariff-related requests by the entities responsible for purchasing electricity in Pakistan and has called for the acceleration of administrative processes.
The two countries have agreed on a formula under which the cost of imported electricity from Iran is determined based on global oil prices and calculated on a floating basis.
If the price of oil exceeds $100 per barrel, the price of electricity will increase by 11 cents per kilowatt-hour.
In 2023, Pakistan’s Central Power Purchasing Agency requested NEPRA to approve the tariff for importing 104 megawatts of electricity from Iran, as well as an additional 100 megawatts from Iran’s State Electricity Company (Tavanir).
Given the recent increase in global oil prices, the cost of Iran’s electricity exports to Pakistan is also expected to rise.
