The Asian Weightlifting Championships 2026 concluded with Alireza Yousefi winning the gold medal in the clean and jerk and finishing as runner-up in the super-heavyweight category.
The event was held in Gandhinagar, India, with the super-heavyweight competitions.
He not only won the gold medal but also set a new world record in the clean and jerk for the super-heavyweight category.
He competed with Song Young-hwan and Hwang Woo-men from South Korea, the renowned Gor Minasyan from Bahrain, Cheng Jin and Guan Ting from Chinese Taipei, Amir Abdullaev from Uzbekistan, and Mu’ayyad Al-Najjar from the UAE.
To secure the bronze medal in the snatch of the super-heavyweight category, Yousefi first lifted 177 kg and then successfully lifted 184 kg, but his third attempt to lift 189 kg was unsuccessful.
In his first clean and jerk attempt, Yousefi lifted 248 kg, securing the gold medal in the clean and jerk and the silver medal in the total.
In his second attempt, the athlete lifted 261 kg (a new world record) but was unsuccessful in lifting it.
Yousefi’s third attempt to lift this weight was successful, making him the first world record holder in the clean and jerk in the new +110 kg weight category.
Iran’s super-heavyweight representative achieved the silver medal in the total with a record of 446 kg.
