Iran’s representative emphasized: When the rights and obligations of NPT member states are not upheld in a balanced manner, and aggressive regimes act freely outside the Treaty by threatening committed members, the continuation of voluntary commitments loses its justification.

According to the Persian edition of ISNA, Reza Najafi, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), delivered a strongly worded statement at the emergency session of the IAEA Board of Governors, held on 15 June 2025 (26 Khordad 1404) at Iran’s request and supported by Russia, China, Venezuela, Pakistan, and other member states. He condemned the Zionist regime’s aggressive attack on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities as a clear act of state terrorism and a blatant violation of the UN Charter and the IAEA Statute.

The U.S. was previously informed of the Israeli attack
Najafi thanked the countries supporting the emergency session and stressed that the United States had prior knowledge of the Israeli regime’s aggression and participated by providing intelligence, political backing, and material support.

IAEA silence has emboldened Israel
He sharply criticized the Agency and the Board of Governors for their continued inaction in the face of Israel’s repeated threats against Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities. Najafi asserted that such silence has not only severely undermined the IAEA’s credibility but has also emboldened Israel to commit further acts of aggression.

Najafi reiterated that the Islamic Republic of Iran, despite biased behavior by some parties and Israel’s continued illegal nuclear policy outside the NPT framework, has faithfully upheld its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty and comprehensive safeguards, providing the Agency with extensive and accurate information on its peaceful nuclear activities. He added that unfortunately, this transparency has, in some cases, become a tool used to threaten Iran’s national security and the lives of its nuclear scientists.

Violation of balance renders cooperation unjustifiable
Najafi stressed: “When the rights and obligations of NPT member states are not observed in a balanced manner, and aggressive regimes act freely outside the Treaty to threaten and attack committed members, the continuation of voluntary implementation of commitments loses its justification.”

The era of hit-and-run is over
He warned that the era of hit-and-run is over. “The Islamic Republic of Iran, within the framework of the UN Charter, the NPT, and the IAEA Statute, reserves its inherent right to defend its people, sovereignty, peaceful nuclear facilities, and national interests, and will take appropriate reciprocal measures at the proper time,” he said.

Iran’s representative also called on the IAEA Board of Governors to strongly condemn Israel’s aggression and hold the Zionist regime fully accountable for the consequences of this dangerous act
