The spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry officially announced its opposition to the imposition of new sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program — a move that constitutes significant diplomatic support for Tehran amid the looming deadline set by European powers.
Beijing’s announcement directly contradicts warnings from Britain, France, and Germany that United Nations sanctions will be reinstated by the end of August if no diplomatic solution is found to the nuclear deadlock.
According to China’s state media, Lin Jian, the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, stated in an official announcement that “China is opposed to the imposition of sanctions.” He also explained that Beijing “believes that this measure will not help the parties build trust or resolve differences, and is not conducive to diplomatic efforts to resume negotiations at an early date.”
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, recently stated that the European countries have no legal standing to trigger the snapback mechanism to reinstate UN sanctions.
