In a message read at a ceremony marking World Habitat Day at Iran’s Ministry of Roads and Urban Development in Tehran on Tuesday, Araghchi said global developments, particularly environmental changes, had created new imperatives for countries such as Iran, which faces droughts, desertification, and water scarcity.
“Climate change, widespread destruction of natural resources and biodiversity, and environmental pollution, along with natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and dust storms… require serious attention,” he said.
He also underlined the importance of promoting social development and fair urban policies to prevent marginalization in cities and curb the growth of crime, describing them as critical issues modern societies must address.
Araghchi added that Iran’s efforts toward achieving these goals are hindered by the effects of “illegal unilateral sanctions,” urging international cooperation to overcome them.
“We certainly expect the United Nations and its affiliated agencies, as well as friendly countries, to support Iran through scientific and technological collaboration and by providing financial resources,” he said.
The minister reaffirmed that the Foreign Ministry would continue supporting domestic institutions, including the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, in advancing the country’s sustainable urban and environmental objectives.
