Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani has stressed the importance of preserving stability and calm in the Caucasus through cooperation among regional countries, without the involvement of extra-regional powers.

Larijani made the remarks during a meeting on Wednesday with Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan in Tehran.

The two sides referred to the longstanding historical ties between Iran and Armenia, and emphasized the need to strengthen bilateral relations based on mutual respect, good neighborliness, and shared interests. Expanding cooperation in regional and security fields, as well as continuing regular consultations between Tehran and Yerevan, were among the main topics of discussion.

The latest regional developments were also reviewed. Both sides underlined the importance of maintaining stability, respecting the national sovereignty of countries, avoiding tension, and promoting constructive cooperation within the framework of responsible neighborly relations.

Larijani expressed satisfaction with the ongoing peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and reiterated that stability in the Caucasus should be safeguarded by regional countries without interference from powers outside the region.
