Trita Parsi, an Iran expert and the co-founder of the Quincy Institute, has told Al Jazeera that although the memorandum of understanding agreed between Iran and the US didn’t include many substantive giveaways from either side, it showed a willingness to move towards a broader deal.

“The truth assessment of who blinked first will not come until we see what the final outcome is, after we spend another thirty days, and hopefully it won’t be longer than that until we get to a final agreement on the nuclear issue,” Parsi said.

He added that it wasn’t clear that Iran would be directly given reparations for the conflict, a key demand, but said that if sanctions are lifted, nuclear issue addressed, “it would likely be a bigger deal than the Obama agreement in 2015.”

This deal could go beyond an arms control deal, but “move beyond 37 years of enmity.”
