The deputy minister of Iran’s Industry, Mines and Trade has said that Iran’s steel production capacity has increased from 2 million tons in 1979 to nearly 60 million tons in the current Iranian year (which began on March 21, 2024).

Avash News: Referring to the steel industry as one of the country’s strategic industries, Masoud Samienejad said that the industry has experienced significant growth in the years following the Islamic Revolution, and that Iran now holds an important position at both the national and regional economic levels.

He said that based on available statistics, Iran’s steel production capacity was about 2 million tons in 1979. “Iran ranks first in the region and 10th in the world in steel production and has maintained this position for four consecutive years,” he added.

“Iran has a remarkable share of the regional market, producing about 66 percent of the Middle East’s steel. The steel industry accounts for about 4.5 percent of the country’s GDP, 16 percent of the capital market, 15 percent of non-oil exports, and 8 percent of the country’s employment,” the official said.

He said that Iran’s steel production capacity will increase to 60 million tons.
Samienejad said that about 30 million tons of steel bars were produced in the last Iranian year, indicating the strategic position of the industry in Iran.
