Speaking with Rudaw, a Kurdish digital news network based in Iraq’s Kurdistan region, the foreign minister said late on Tuesday that messages are exchanged between Iran and the US, but no meeting has been held yet.
The main problem is that there is no direct communication, he said, adding that messages are exchanged without holding a meeting, which complicates the situation.
If a decision is made to hold a meeting, Iraq would be able to play a role, but the US is yet to decide if it would hold discussions, he further said.
According to the Iraqi foreign minister, Iran is willing to hold talks without any pre-conditions, but the US is placing different conditions, from uranium enrichment and the amount of the enriched material. Also, Iran has made it clear that it will not initiate any war but it will defend itself if attacked, he added.
Hussein also said that he has not exchanged messages between Iran and the US, but has listened to both sides and discussed the existing issues.
Iran and the US were in the middle of talks over the Iranian nuclear program when Israel launched a war of aggression on June 13, 2025, which was later joined by Washington.
Despite the aggression, Tehran has repeatedly stated its readiness to engage in negotiations based on equal footing, mutual respect, and shared interests.
