Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, says the latest warmongering statements by US President Donald Trump will escalate regional tensions, increase the risk of miscalculations, and pose a direct threat to international peace and security.

Iravani made the remarks in a letter to the UN secretary-general and the president of the Security Council on Wednesday, hours after Trump threatened Iran to “come to the table” and negotiate a “nuclear deal” or face a war more destructive than the 12-day conflict waged by Israel in June.

The Iranian government categorically rejects and condemns these warmongering remarks, which are irresponsible and provocative in nature and constitute a clear violation of the fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, the ambassador said in his letter.

Iravani also said that threats to use force against an independent nation constitute a clear violation of Article 2, Paragraph 4, of the UN Charter—an article that explicitly and unambiguously prohibits both the use of force and the threat of its use against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.
