Avash News: In a statement released by the United Nations University, it was noted:
“Kaveh Madani, the architect of the concept of ‘water bankruptcy’ used to describe today’s acute global crisis, has received the world’s highest water award due to his exceptional and courageous ability to translate pioneering research into global policymaking under conditions fraught with personal risk and political complexity.”
The announcement was made at a special ceremony held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on the occasion of World Water Day. The prize is scheduled to be officially presented in August 2026 during World Water Week in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.
In the environmental community, the Stockholm Water Prize is often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Water.”
The selection of Professor Madani marks a historic milestone for the global water community: at the age of 44, he is the youngest recipient in the 35-year history of the prize. He is also the first United Nations official and the first former policymaker to receive this honor.
