Laurence Norman, a Wall Street Journal reporter, wrote on Friday in a post on the social media platform X: “According to sources, in last night’s call between the foreign ministers of three European countries and Kaja Kallas (EU foreign policy chief) with Seyed Abbas Araghchi (Iran’s Foreign Minister), the issue of extending the deadline for activating the trigger mechanism under the nuclear deal was raised. The proposal called for Iran to resume nuclear talks with the U.S. and European countries and restart cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Proposals regarding the limitation of enriched uranium stockpiles were also raised, though no specific details were provided. Sources say precise conditions need to be worked out.”
He continued: “The proposal involves a one-time extension of the trigger mechanism deadline. The current deadline extends until October, but if Iran—and its allies in the Security Council, namely Russia and China—agree, further extension is possible.”
