According to the Iraqi News Agency, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi inaugurated the meeting, which brings together representatives of all OIC member states.
Ambassador Hassanein Kamil, spokesperson for the meeting, said Baghdad took over the council’s presidency from Turkiye following the opening ceremony.
He added that representatives of all OIC member states were attending the gathering, alongside a representative of the United Nations secretary-general. Forty international organizations are also participating in the meeting, Kamil said.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Baghdad on Saturday morning to attend the two-day session, scheduled for October 17-18. He was welcomed at the airport by an Iraqi deputy foreign minister.
During his visit, Araghchi is scheduled to address the meeting and hold bilateral talks with his counterparts from Islamic countries.
The meeting is being held under the central theme of “Dialogue and Solidarity: Two Fundamental Pillars for Promoting Peace and Sustainable Development,” underscoring the gathering’s focus on cooperation among OIC member states.
The OIC brings together Muslim-majority countries and other member states to coordinate positions on issues of common concern, including regional developments and cooperation among Islamic nations.
