As part of his trip to New York, Masoud Pezeshkian met on Friday afternoon, local time, with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid for discussions.
During the meeting, Pezeshkian expressed appreciation for Iraq’s adherence to its commitments and emphasized the deep religious, cultural, and ethnic commonalities between the peoples of Iran and Iraq. He added that beyond the neighborhood, Tehran and Baghdad share profound spiritual and cultural bonds. “There is no reason for discord among Muslims, yet enemies continually attempt to deepen divisions and create problems among Islamic countries. These efforts occur not only between governments but also within societies, including Iran and Iraq.”
He also expressed hope that relations between the two countries would continue to grow and deepen.
Referring to the policies of the Zionist regime in the region, Pezeshkian stated, “This regime is the main obstacle to establishing peace in the region. It has built its existence on crime and, through attacks on various countries, has endangered regional security and stability.”
For his part, the Iraqi President emphasized that relations between Iran and Iraq are at a high and ideal level and confirmed his country’s readiness to expand political, economic, and cultural cooperation with Iran. He added, “We consider ourselves one nation, and our destinies are intertwined.”
Abdul Latif Rashid expressed satisfaction with the current trajectory of bilateral relations and stated, “We understand Iran’s conditions and support any diplomatic or political action that strengthens cooperation and enhances regional peace and stability. Iraq also welcomes and supports any efforts to accelerate and improve Iran’s engagement in negotiations.”
The Iraqi President further condemned the Zionist regime’s aggressions from Palestine and Lebanon to Yemen and Iran, adding, “The Zionist regime has become a cancerous tumor for the region. Israel’s pride in crime and violence is unprecedented in history. The nations of the region will sooner or later respond appropriately to these aggressions.”
