Naser Taghvaei, creator of Uncle Napoleon and Captain Khorshid, passes away

Naser Taghvaei, filmmaker, photographer, writer, and one of the most influential personalities in Iran’s cinema history, has passed away at the age of 84.

Avash News: Captain Khorshid, Ey Iran, and Lineless Paper were among his most characteristic works. Taghvaei was one of the pioneers of a movement in Iran’s cinema history that some historians later called “Iran’s Cinema New Wave.” He has been described as an auteur filmmaker.

Taghvaei was first attracted to television through making TV series. He created the famous series Uncle Napoleon two years before the Islamic Revolution. The film was very warmly received by audiences both in intellectual circles and among ordinary people. In 1988, Taghvaei received the Bronze Panther Award at the Locarno Film Festival for Captain Khorshid.

He opposed censorship and decided to stop producing films and books. Taghvaei was from Abadan, in Iran’s southern Khuzestan Province.
