In a post on his X account late on Friday, Jalali said that the US sought to impose pressure on Iran through a new resolution, but the attempt collapsed after Russia and China opposed the draft.
He thanked the two countries for standing firmly by Iran and preventing an unfair and politically motivated initiative, saying their joint veto had marked a historic moment in the Council’s record.
He added that the threadbare instrument of sanctions belonged to a past era and had already lost its effectiveness, noting that the future world will be shaped by countries that believe in a multipolar order and multilateral cooperation.
The draft resolution was put to a vote at the United Nations Security Council on September 17, 2026, in New York, where the United States sought to extend the mandate of UN experts monitoring sanctions that had been reimposed on Iran under the snapback mechanism.
The proposal received 11 votes in favor, while Pakistan and Somalia abstained, but it ultimately failed because Russia and China vetoed the text, shutting down the effort to continue independent monitoring of the reinstated sanctions.
