Mohammad Berno, an Iranian photojournalist, has depicted faces observed during the 40th day following the martyrdom of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.

Avash News: Berno explains that faces come before history. These photos are efforts to see human beings not within a fixed narrative, but in the distance between “occurrence” and “narrative”—a place where meaning has not yet stabilized and reality remains in fluctuation between interpretations.

In this destabilized situation, what remains is presence—a presence that reveals itself in faces.
In the gazes, in hands, in every face, there is a sign of being in a moment that does not yet belong to history.
Humans are readable through their faces… Here, faces are neither witnesses nor judges; they are the occurrences themselves.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution was martyred on February 28 in a US-Israel airstrike.
