The center was inaugurated on Thursday, coinciding with World Children’s Day, in a ceremony also attended by Mohammad Eslami, vice president and head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, and a number of Health Ministry officials.
Aref and Zafarghandi visited the hospital’s inpatient wards and met with children receiving treatment and their families.
Speaking at the ceremony, Tehran University of Medical Sciences Chancellor Reza Raeis-Karami said the opening of the center could play an effective role in reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses for families.
“Today is an important day ahead of us, because we have two important projects,” Raeis-Karami said, referring to the inauguration of the children’s cancer center and the launch of construction of the 320-bed Amir Alam 2 Hospital.
He described the comprehensive center for the diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancer as a turning point for the country, noting that services in this field had previously been provided only by the private sector.
“With the opening of this center, the first university-based and public center in the field of childhood cancer treatment begins its activities,” he added.
