According to Iran’s Deeds and Properties Registration Organization, 17 marriages were registered in the first six months of the current Iranian year (starting on March 21, 2025) among people over 80 years old.

Avash News: Azam Ghavidel, spokeswoman for Iran’s Deeds and Properties Registration Organization, said that during this period, 17 cases of marriage were recorded for women above 80 years of age, the oldest being a 93-year-old woman.

“During this period, about 738 cases of marriage were registered among men above 80 years of age, the oldest of whom was a 119-year-old man,” she explained.

The average life expectancy in Iran has increased from 55 years before the Islamic Revolution to about 78 years, according to an interview conducted last year with Alireza Raisi, deputy head of Iran’s Health Ministry.

However, according to statistics, the average age of marriage in Iran has also risen. Data released about a month ago by the deputy head of the Ministry of Youth and Sports shows that 14 percent of women and 4 percent of men over 45 have never married.

Alireza Rahimi said that the marriage rate had declined from 4.25 percent three years ago to 3.85 percent the following year.

Many reasons have been mentioned for young people delaying marriage until later in life. While this seems to be a global trend partly driven by the demands of modern life, economic issues, women seeking higher education and better job opportunities, and even immigration are among the factors that can influence people’s decision to marry—or not.

Nevertheless, Iran’s elderly population seems more optimistic about tying the knot after 80! Congratulations!
